Background: Brandi BaileyEnd of Life Doula and OwnerIn 2008, my beautiful mom Sheryle passed away from a rare cancer at age 57. It was my first up close and personal experience with terminal illness and death. I was 30 years old and struggled with not knowing where things were at for most of the last year of my mom's life. It was a huge learning experience, and it changed my life.
In the years following, I have been along-side others living with life limiting illnesses and understand what people and their families can be experiencing. When I first read about End of Life Doulas, I was struck by the value and need for this kind of support, and knew that I wanted to be a part of it. Personally, I do this work in honour of my mom. In fact, Honour End of Life Care was launched on August 15, 2018 - on the 10 year anniversary of my mom's passing. |
Brandi's Training and Credentials
Member of the End of Life Doula Association of Canada
I am a member of the End of Life Doula Association of Canada, which provides framework for End of Life Doulas in this emerging field of work. I adhere to the association's Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice which includes, but not limited to:
End of Life Doula Training
I have also completed the Douglas College End of Life Doula certificate program, developed and taught by End of Life Doula pioneer Jennifer Mallmes. This program provided me with an education from an experienced End of Life Doula, as well as connections to other doulas from around the Lower Mainland.
Hospice Training and Volunteering
I've completed the Palliative Care Support training at my local neighbourhood hospice. This in-depth program provided hands-on training from their Palliative Support Services & Site Manager and guest speakers included the hospice's Palliative Care Physician, Patient Care Coordinator, Bereavement Services Coordinator, Spiritual Care Practitioner and Social Worker. Having access to qualified palliative care healthcare professionals was a valuable experience, and I asked question after question after question.
I have volunteered weekly at the hospice since 2018, and help to run their Virtual Reality program, bringing amazing virtual experiences to hospice patients from the comfort of their rooms.
Palliative Care Industry Work
I am a guest contributor to the Douglas College End of Life Doula certificate program, sharing my experience launching my doula practice with up and coming doulas.
I have an administrative position with the End of Life Doula Association of Canada, and am also on their planning team for the Rethinking the End of Life Experience conference for palliative care professionals in Spring 2020.
On-going Palliative Care Training
I regularly attend palliative care seminars and workshops to keep up on the latest industry developments. I recently took the Mealtime Companion training at my local hospice, as well as the Children Experience Grief Too: Supporting Children Through the Dying and Death of a Family Member webinar hosted by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.
Career Background
Lastly, I have a background in business administration, with 20+ years of education and experience in advertising and marketing prior to making the transition over to doula work. I worked my way up from an entry level position to a senior executive position, and know that a lot of hard work and perseverance is needed to run a professional business.
You can expect exceptional customer service, reliability and accountability from me.

After the sudden diagnosis of terminal cancer for my dear husband we were both in shock and needed to be consoled. I had heard of Death Doula’s but had no idea exactly what they did. I decided to go online and see what I could find.
With a stroke of luck, I searched and found Brandi, a Death Doula. Amazingly she responded back very quickly, and wouldn’t you know the next evening she was at our house talking with my husband and I and our youngest daughter. She spent almost 3 hours and told us she was here to listen and offer emotional and spiritual support. Well she did that very well and we all felt so much better after her first visit.
Through our journey of just over three months Brandi came over a few more times and always leaving us feeling better. She knew what to ask us in a good way and showed to us how much she truly cared. My husband was a more reserved person, but he trusted her and opened up so easily with her. I want to thank Brandi for her words of support and encouragement for my husband.
There were many things we faced in our situation and many times we were running on emotions and lack of sleep. Brandi was able to guide us with what to do, what to say to people and most importantly how to ask for help especially near the end.
After my husband had passed, she stayed in touch via email and texting and sent over very valuable information such as a variety of grieving supports and how to deal with a loved ones ashes. She covered all the bases.
Today just over two months since my sweet husband passed away, we stay in touch and I so appreciate the kindness and compassion she shows. She told me that my husband worried how I would be after he passed, and she promised him she would take care of me. Well she certainly respected my husband’s wishes and I am forever grateful and blessed for Brandi. I told her the last time we spoke that you have found your gift and calling.
